Benin, Togo, Niger customers owe Nigeria $10.17m for Q2 2026 power
NERC said electricity customers in Benin, Togo and Niger left $10.17 million unpaid on power invoices issued by Nigeria’s Market Operator in Q2 2026, having been billed $18.84 million but paying only $8.67 million, a 46.02% remittance performance. Mainstream-NIGELEC settled its full $5.79 million invoice, Paras-SBEE paid $1.73 million of $2.46 million (70.33%), and Paras-CEET paid $1.15 million of $1.68 million (68.45%), while Transcorp-SBEE made no payment on its $2.67 million Ughelli and $4.38 million Afam 3 invoices and Odukpani-CEET paid nothing on its $1.86 million bill.
The shortfall underscores persistent cross-border collection issues for Nigeria’s power sector, especially when compared with domestic bilateral customers who paid N6.91 billion of the N7.55 billion billed in Q2, a 91.54% rate. Several domestic accounts also missed payments, including NDPHC/Weewood, Trans Amadi/OAU, Alaoji/APLE and Taopex/KAM INT/KAM STEEL, and Ajaokuta Steel Co. Ltd and its host community owe N1.18 billion in NBET invoices and N171.04 million to the Market Operator.
Although the three international customers made $10.33 million in Q1 arrears payments during Q2—SBEE contributed $7.01 million, Paras-CEET $1.67 million and Mainstream-NIGELEC $1.65 million—the outstanding Q2 balance shows current-quarter settlements remain below half of billed amounts. Given earlier reports of $11.16 million owed at end‑2025 and $14.19 million unpaid in Q1 2024, the pattern raises concerns about revenue security. Will regulators tighten payment terms or adopt prepaid mechanisms to protect Nigeria’s cross-border electricity income?
