Flooding in India’s Bihar state has affected nearly five million people after heavy rain pushed all seven major rivers above danger levels. Officials reported that more than 827,000 families received 7,000 rupees (about $72) each in direct aid, while 13 relief camps, over 1,000 community kitchens and nearly 1,800 boats have been deployed. The Bihar government says food, clean water and medicines are being distributed, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a federal team to assess damages. Local media cite around 20 deaths, with farmland submerged and residents describing life on rooftops and reliance on dirty water.

For Nigerians, the scale of the disaster highlights the growing threat of extreme weather in regions vulnerable to flooding, underscoring the importance of early warning systems and resilient infrastructure. India is a key trade partner, and prolonged disruption could affect supply chains of goods such as pharmaceuticals and textiles.

The crisis serves as a reminder that climate-related disasters require swift, coordinated response—a lesson relevant as Nigeria prepares for its own rainy season.
