Bolt rolled out Bolt Plus in Kenya on October 15, a paid membership offering cashback on rides, free food delivery, priority driver matching, and three free ride cancellations monthly. The headline grabber: an annual plan at KES 899 ($6.92)—roughly KES 75 ($0.58) per month—far below the KES 280 ($2.16) monthly rate and Uber One's KES 2,800 ($22) yearly fee. First month is free; introductory monthly rate of KES 119 ($0.92) for six months.

The bundle combines rides and food delivery (via Naivas, QuickMart, Java House, KFC, Bolt Market), giving Bolt two revenue streams to subsidise the steep discount. Uber One and Glovo Prime (KES 400/$3 monthly, delivery only) already compete here.

But the fine print complicates value: cashback is advertised as 10% but listed as "5-10%" in details—likely tiered like Uber's 10% on premium rides, 5% on economy. Cashback stays as app credit; Bolt hasn't said what happens to balances if you cancel. Free delivery applies only at "+" marked outlets with qualifying minimums, savings "up to" KES 200 per order. Priority matching may mean longer waits for non-members; driver earnings impact undisclosed.

At KES 899, the risk is low for regular users—a single KES 200 delivery saving covers nearly three months. But Bolt hasn't confirmed if this is a launch price or what renewals will cost. The economics suggest a bet on locking in habits before margins matter.

If you already use Bolt for both rides and food several times a month, the annual plan likely pays for itself. If you hop between apps for best deals, the cashback may never cover the fee. Will you commit to Bolt for a year at KES 75/month, or keep comparing Uber and Glovo per order?
