BPP DG Adedokun reports ₦1.1trn saved, details 23 reforms at retreat
BPP Director-General Dr Adebowale Adedokun announced at the July 9-12, 2026 Permanent Secretaries' Retreat in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State that the Bureau helped the Federal Government save approximately ₦1.1 trillion in 2025 through improved price intelligence and budget evaluation, with weekly savings averaging ₦8 billion since January 2026. He outlined 23 key reforms underway to align Nigeria's procurement system with global best practices.
These reforms include proposed amendments to the Public Procurement Act, development of a National Procurement Strategy Framework, revised procurement thresholds, community-based procurement initiatives, contractor classification systems, full rollout of Electronic Government Procurement (e-GP), and the Nigeria First Policy. Adedokun also revealed that BPP has introduced administrative sanctions for erring procurement officers and a Debarment Policy to blacklist contractors violating due process, while urging Ministries, Departments and Agencies to publish contract awards on their websites and the BPP portal.
The reforms are gaining global recognition, with development partners acknowledging Nigeria's strides under President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. Specialized undergraduate degrees in Sustainable Procurement have been established at six universities including Ahmadu Bello University, University of Lagos, and University of Benin. Adedokun stressed that "procurement leadership is how we keep the covenant" between budget approval and service delivery, noting that roads, hospitals and schools are all built through procurement processes.
