Breaking: APC has renominated Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu's running mate for the 2027 election, maintaining the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket. The decision, announced last week, renews debate over religious inclusion in Nigeria's leadership.

Supporters argue the ticket ensures continuity and rewards loyalty. Senator Diket Plang praised Shettima's "loyalty, active, accessible and committed" service, while Prof. Bello Magaji noted it preserves "institutional memory and policy consistency" for ongoing reforms. They claim the partnership's "working synergy" enables effective governance.

Critics counter that the ticket overlooks Nigeria's diversity. NRM's Rev. Emmanuel Olorunmagba urged voters to judge candidates by "competence, track records, policy proposals" rather than ticket composition. The Middle Belt Forum's Luka Binniyat lamented another "missed opportunity" to acknowledge the region's strategic importance, noting its 60% northern voting population despite Christian majority. NOSCEF and ACF remain undecided, with ACF stating they'll "watch as implications unfold" before taking position.

As 2027 approaches, the core question persists: Should leadership symbolism reflect Nigeria's religious diversity, or prioritize governance continuity? Voters may weigh ticket composition against candidates' records on economy, security and development when deciding their vote.
