Brent crude for November delivery rose 2.8% to $107.54 a barrel on Monday, while US WTI for October climbed 2.3% to $102.34, pushing both benchmarks back above the $100 mark. The surge follows escalating tensions in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia's temporary shutdown of its East-West pipeline after drone attacks and a merchant vessel struck in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday that killed one person and injured three, according to Iranian authorities. Iran now requires vessels to seek permission to transit the strait and is weighing a service‑fee scheme, with non‑compliant ships regularly targeted by Iranian strikes and the US periodically bombing the Iranian coastline to challenge Tehran's control. Oman has also postponed talks between Iran and Gulf states on the waterway’s future, a route that carries a large share of global seaborne oil trade.

For Nigeria, an oil‑exporting nation, higher crude prices can increase government export earnings but may also push up domestic fuel costs and inflationary pressures, affecting household budgets and transport expenses. The situation highlights how regional security shocks quickly translate into price signals at the pump and in the national budget.

Will you adjust your spending to accommodate higher transport costs, or do you hope the price rise translates into stronger government revenue for improved public services and infrastructure?
