CAF appoints new referee for Nigeria vs Algeria AFCON quarter-final
CAF has appointed Senegalese referee Issa Sy as centre referee for Nigeria's AFCON 2025 quarter-final against Algeria at Grand Stade de Marrakech. This comes after Somali official Omar Artan, named Africa's best referee in 2025, was removed for violating CAF sponsorship rules by wearing non-approved boots during an earlier game. Sy previously served as VAR official in Morocco's Round of 16 match against Tanzania. The match is scheduled for this week. Nigeria will need to adapt quickly to the new official's style. Will this sudden referee change affect the Super Eagles' game plan or preparation strategy?
