CAF confirmed Samson Adamu as its new General Secretary today, November 1, 2026, following a competitive selection process. The Nigerian administrator, who has spent eight years at the continental body, steps up from his acting role held since March when Veron Mosengo-Omba resigned to lead the DRC football federation.

Adamu becomes one of the most senior Nigerians in African football governance. His new remit covers CAF's entire administrative operation — implementing policies, coordinating across 54 member associations, and driving football development continent-wide. Before this, he directed CAF's competitions and tournament events, placing him at the centre of AFCON, Champions League, and youth tournament logistics.

The appointment breaks a decades-long pattern where Egypt's Fahmy family held the post from 1961 to 2019. It also adds a layer of family history: Adamu's father, Amos, sat on FIFA's executive committee before a 2010 bribery ban. CAF President Patrice Motsepe says the role was widely advertised and interviewed, part of broader governance reforms and commercial expansion plans.

With CAF pushing to professionalise its operations and unlock commercial value, Adamu's insider experience positions him to navigate both. The question for Nigerian football stakeholders: does this appointment translate to stronger Nigerian influence in continental decision-making, or is it an individual merit win?
