CAF President Vows to Implement CAS Ruling on AFCON Dispute

CAF President Patrice Motsepe declared he will "respect and implement" the pending Court of Arbitration for Sport decision on Senegal's appeal against being stripped of the Africa Cup of Nations title, stating his personal opinion is irrelevant. The controversy stems from the January 18 final in Rabat where Senegal initially beat Morocco 1-0, but CAF's appeals body overturned the result after Senegal players, coach Pape Thiaw, and staff walked off protesting a late penalty award. After returning, Brahim Diaz missed the penalty and Pape Gueye scored in extra time. Morocco's subsequent appeal succeeded, and CAF awarded them a 3-0 victory.

The dispute directly involves Senegal and Morocco—two top African football nations—with diplomatic implications. CAF fined involved figures but kept the result initially. Senegal further defied the ruling by parading the trophy at Paris' Stade de France on March 28 before their friendly against Peru, and wearing shirts displaying two stars (for their 2022 win and the disputed 2026 victory).

CAF announced it is changing statutes and regulations to strengthen trust in referees, VAR operators, and judicial bodies, aiming to prevent repeat incidents. Additionally, Nigeria-born CAF official Samson Adamu was appointed caretaker general secretary, replacing retiring Veron Mosengo-Omba who reached the mandatory retirement age of 66.

The CAS decision timeline remains unclear but will be binding. CAF's reform efforts may soon impact all member associations' domestic leagues and competitions. Nigerian football administrators should monitor these changes closely as they'll affect Nigerian clubs in CAF tournaments. With Nigeria gaining administrative influence through Adamu's appointment, the question arises: Is CAF's commitment to respect CAS a genuine step toward accountable governance, or merely damage control for a flawed process?
