CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, speaking at the association’s 50th anniversary press briefing, urged political actors to place Nigeria above personal interest and refrain from using religion, ethnicity, or regional sentiments as campaign tools ahead of the 2027 general elections. He warned that weaponizing these identities has fueled bloodshed and division in past elections, risking another generation of youths sacrificed for political ambition, while highlighting widespread economic hardship—rising living costs, unemployment, and struggles for families to afford food, healthcare, education, and housing. CAN called for issue‑based campaigns, peaceful elections, and urged leaders to take responsibility for their supporters’ conduct, discouraging hate speech, intimidation, and violence. The body also encouraged voters to vote according to conscience without coercion and asked the government to pursue policies that create jobs, support SMEs, and protect the vulnerable. As 2027 approaches, citizens can monitor campaign rhetoric, report incitement, and prioritize candidates whose platforms address concrete economic challenges.
