Canada-Nigeria direct flight talks advance amid $3.2B trade growth
Canada and Nigeria are advancing talks for direct commercial flights, specifically Lagos-Toronto routes, as announced by Canada's Deputy High Commissioner Carlos Rojas-Arbulú Thursday at Lagos Business School. While a codeshare arrangement exists, officials negotiate direct services to strengthen air connectivity within broader bilateral cooperation covering trade, education and innovation.
This reflects deepening ties: Canada-Nigeria trade reached $3.2 billion in 2025 (up 10%), with over 45,000 Nigerian students studying in Canada yearly and 120,000 Nigerians now residing there. Q1 2026 trade hit N775.4 billion (N670.29B exports, N105.11B imports), maintaining Canada as Nigeria's 9th-largest trading partner. Canadian investments exceed $345 million over five years plus new $30M funding for priority sectors including healthcare and women's economic participation.
