Manchester United beat Arsenal 3-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Michael Carrick praising his team's character after the victory. This comes just one week after Carrick's first game in charge, where United beat Manchester City 2-0. Matheus Cunha scored the winning goal for the Red Devils, after Mikel Merino appeared to have earned a point for the Gunners. Patrick Dorgu and Bryan Mbeumo had put United ahead, following an early Lisandro Martinez own goal that gave Arsenal the lead. Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Carrick said: "I think we understood how the game was going to go and the flow of it. I thought we started to take the ball and connections through the pitch, had that composure and a few moments gaining a bit of confidence as well." United found themselves trailing after Martinez's own goal, but Dorgu and Mbeumo turned the game around before Merino's late equaliser looked to have salvaged a point for Arsenal. Cunha's late winner secured all three points for the Red Devils. Carrick added: "We were having a decent spell and seemed to be coming into the game when they scored, which was disappointing. Again, we showed the character to come back and there were stages in the game where you have to defend. They make you defend the box really and it's challenging at times, but I thought we had enough in the game to keep believing in the confidence and I always fancied us to score." Arsenal remain top of the Premier League table despite the defeat, but Manchester United's second consecutive win under Carrick sees them climb the table after a difficult season. The win also maintains United's perfect record against the traditional 'big six' sides this season under their new manager. With the January transfer window still open, will Carrick's men build on this momentum, or will Arsenal bounce back and maintain their title challenge?
