CashAfrica partners with Chicken Republic for tap-to-pay at 350 Nigerian outlets

CashAfrica has partnered with Food Concepts to introduce mobile tap-to-pay across 350 Chicken Republic outlets nationwide, starting in Lagos before expanding to Abuja and other locations. Customers with NFC-enabled phones and supported banking/fintech apps can now tap to pay at PalmPay PoS terminals, with ChamsSwitch routing transactions between institutions. This aims to make phone-card tapping the new checkout norm in Nigeria, where cash, bank transfers, and card-and-PIN still dominate despite CBN's 2022 contactless payment plan noting over 12 million contactless cards in circulation by November 2025. CashAfrica provides the contactless technology infrastructure, while acknowledging that getting banks and fintechs to support the service and building customer awareness remain key challenges for habit formation beyond novelty. The rollout tests whether a major QSR chain can instil tapping as routine during everyday transactions, potentially accelerating Nigeria's shift toward digital payments if successful at scale.
