CBN cut the benchmark interest rate to 23% from 26.5% at its September 21-22 Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Abuja, the first reduction since February after holding rates steady in May and July. The decision resets the Monetary Policy Rate and adjusts the asymmetric facilities corridor to +50/-300 basis points to discourage banks from holding idle funds with the CBN and encourage increased lending into the economy.

While cutting the MPR, the committee maintained all Cash Reserve Ratio requirements: 45% for commercial banks, 16% for merchant banks, and 75% on non-TSA public-sector deposits for liquidity management purposes. Governor Olayemi Cardoso described the move as an 'operational realignment' to strengthen monetary policy transmission, emphasizing it does not constitute a change in the current monetary policy stance but rather aims to support the transition to an inflation targeting framework.

The rate cut comes as Nigeria's headline inflation eased to 15.39% in August according to NBS data, down from 15.43% in July, though renewed fuel price increases could create fresh upward pressure on goods and services costs. Lower interest rates should reduce borrowing costs for businesses and consumers with variable-rate loans, while reducing returns on savings deposits.

Given cheaper credit access but uncertain inflation trajectory from fuel costs, will you consider refinancing existing loans, postponing major purchases requiring financing, or reallocating savings to higher-yield alternatives?
