CBN Governor Cardoso wins 2026 Central Bank of the Year Award for Nigeria's economic reforms
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso received the 2026 Central Banking Central Bank of the Year Award in London on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. He dedicated the award to the CBN board, management, and staff, emphasizing it was a testament to collective efforts in implementing institutional reforms and strengthening economic stability since he took office in September 2023.
The award recognizes specific achievements under Cardoso's leadership: unifying exchange rates across multiple FX windows, adopting orthodox monetary policy, overseeing the bank recapitalization that raised ₦4.7 trillion (completed in March), and growing Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves to $50.1 billion as of June 9 - the highest level since January 2009 when reserves totalled $50.6 billion.
