Chinese state broadcaster CCTV has suspended all LaLiga match coverage after Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé joked about an edited image portraying him as Mao Zedong, referring to a "Chinese dictator" in a video on The Bridge. The suspension threatens LaLiga's television rights in China, a market the Spanish topflight has spent a decade cultivating as a strategic priority.

This develops a day after Mbappé lost the 2026 Ballon d'Or to Bayern Munich's Harry Kane by a narrow margin. Mbappé had scored a brace in Madrid's 2-1 El Clásico win at the Nou Camp just 24 hours before the ceremony.

For Nigerian football fans who follow LaLiga, the stakes are clear: China represents massive broadcast revenue. If CCTV's suspension holds or escalates to rights termination, LaLiga's global revenue model takes a hit—potentially affecting how matches are packaged and distributed worldwide, including to African broadcasters.

LaLiga has not yet issued an official response. Mbappé's camp has also stayed silent on whether the Mao reference was deliberate satire or a misjudged joke. The Bridge video remains circulating on Chinese social media despite censorship efforts.

Will LaLiga prioritize its China revenue over player expression, or will this blow over like previous diplomatic spats?
