At least 42 people were killed in ethnic clashes that erupted Saturday in the sub-prefecture of Guereda, Wadi Fira province, Chad. The fighting began as a dispute over access to a water well between local communities, according to government officials.

Deputy Prime Minister Limane Mahamat confirmed the situation is under control, noting that several ministers, senior local officials, and the military's chief of staff were dispatched to the area Sunday.

Eastern Chad has experienced years of conflicts between farmers and nomadic Arab herders, with tensions further exacerbated by refugee flows from neighboring Sudan. International Crisis Group estimates these resource disputes have caused over 1,000 deaths and 2,000 injuries between 2021 and 2024, raising concerns about regional stability.

With water resources becoming increasingly scarce across the Sahel region, what infrastructure solutions could prevent similar conflicts from spreading to neighboring countries?
