Chelsea have snapped up Atalanta defender Marco Palestra on a seven‑year contract worth over £43 million, marking the first senior signing of the Xabi Alonso era at Stamford Bridge (aside from a few pre‑agreements). The 21‑year‑old Italian international impressed the Blues during a loan spell at Cagliari last season, and Chelsea moved quickly after Inter Milan’s negotiations with Atalanta stalled. Personal terms were agreed swiftly, and Palestra signed the deal on July 1, 2026.

He said he chose Chelsea because it is “one of the premier clubs globally” and he is excited to work under Alonso, whose vision of an exciting, attacking style he finds exhilarating. Palestra also reflected on his time at Atalanta, writing on Instagram that the Bergamo club was where he grew “as a footballer and as an individual.”

The signing signals Chelsea’s intent to rebuild their defence under Alonso, adding a young, versatile centre‑back who can play both sides of the back three. At £43 million, the fee shows the club’s willingness to invest in talent with resale value, while the long contract gives Alonso time to shape the player to his system.

With the transfer window still open, will Chelsea push for more defensive reinforcements, or will Palestra’s arrival be enough to solidify the back line as they chase Premier League glory?
