China has issued one-year travel bans on four New Zealand lawmakers—Maureen Pugh, David Wilson, Laura McClure, and Duncan Webb—following their visit to Taiwan in May 2026. The MPs received notification of the restriction upon returning to New Zealand, with Chinese officials suggesting the ban might be lifted if they issue an apology.

The decision has triggered a diplomatic conflict between Beijing and Wellington, with New Zealand's foreign ministry calling it unprecedented and troubling. The ministry emphasized that parliamentary visits to Taiwan have been recognized practice for decades and don't contradict New Zealand's One China policy. However, China's embassy in Wellington accused the MPs of disregarding "serious concerns" and conveying "wrong signals" by engaging with Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party.

McClure characterized the ban as "foreign interference" and stated she won't apologize, asserting MPs' right to travel freely. Foreign Minister Winston Peters is seeking clarification from both governments about what he calls a deviation from established diplomatic norms. This follows similar travel bans affecting Taiwan's President (due to African airspace restrictions) and South Korea's President Yoon amid martial law investigations.
