Chris Pratt's 'Mercy' tops US box office with $11 million debut
Sci-fi thriller 'Mercy' starring Chris Pratt opened at number one in North America with $11 million in ticket sales, ending Avatar: Fire and Ash's five-week reign at the top. Pratt plays a man on trial for murdering his wife in the Amazon MGM Studios film, with his fate decided by an artificial intelligence judge. The film's opening weekend was impacted by a severe winter storm that closed theaters across two-thirds of the United States. Industry expert David A. Gross described the $11 million debut as 'very good' considering the extreme weather forced many people to stay home. Final numbers may be lower on Monday once the full effects of the cold and snow are calculated. Avatar: Fire and Ash dropped to second place with another $7 million, bringing its domestic total to $378.5 million plus $1 billion overseas. Disney's Zootopia 2 held third place at $5.7 million, crossing the $400 million mark in the US and Canada. The Housemaid took fourth place with $4.2 million, followed by 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple at $3.6 million. Rounding out the top 10 were Marty Supreme ($3.5m), Return to Silent Hill ($3.3m), Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring re-release ($2m), Hamnet ($2m), and Primate ($1.6m).
