Claude Makelele slams Mourinho’s tactics after Real Madrid’s 2-1 loss to Atletico
Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has slammed José Mourinho’s tactical approach after Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in last weekend’s LaLiga derby. Speaking to ESPN, Makelele said Mourinho set up Los Blancos poorly against a disciplined Atletico side, leaving the team without a clear game plan or understanding between players and coach. He insisted the loss was not due to poor refereeing but to an obvious deficiency in the squad, quoting: “There is no understanding. Neither between the players nor with the coach. Mourinho must talk to them.” Makelele added that the team is weak, lacks ideas, and that fans should demand more from the players and management. He dismissed claims that the match officials influenced the result, stressing that the problem lies within Real Madrid’s preparation and execution. The criticism comes as Real Madrid struggles to find consistency early in the 2026-27 LaLiga season, raising questions about Mourinho’s ability to adapt his tactics to high-stakes matches. For Nigerian fans who follow the Spanish giants, the public rebuke highlights growing concerns over the club’s direction and whether the current squad can deliver the silverware expected of a team of Real Madrid’s stature.
