Cooking gas jumps to N1,500/kg nationwide (25% increase)
Cooking gas price skyrocketed to N1,500 per kilogram nationwide, up N300 from N1,200 in Abuja and other major cities, according to the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers. The 25% increase comes as Nigerians already struggling with high cost of living face additional financial burden. Marketers warn that if the government doesn't intervene immediately, citizens may protest against gas station owners nationwide. The price hike affects an estimated 60 million Nigerian households that rely on cooking gas for daily meals, with a typical family of four using approximately 3-4 kilograms monthly—adding N900 to monthly cooking expenses. This follows consistent price increases since earlier May when cooking gas stood at N1,200 per kilogram. With no immediate resolution in sight, households may need to adjust cooking schedules, explore alternative energy sources, or reduce consumption to manage the increased cost burden.
