Cooking gas scarcity hits Nigeria as prices jump to ₦1,500/kg
Cooking gas prices have surged to ₦1,500 per kg from ₦1,300, with marketers paying ₦25-26 million for 20MT of cooking gas due to erratic supply. The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) warns millions of households, small businesses and food vendors face "untold hardship" as they struggle to refill cylinders at prohibitive costs.
Marketers cite persistent supply shortages, high depot prices, logistics bottlenecks and rising operational costs as key challenges. The crisis threatens years of progress in Nigeria's clean energy transition, with many families reverting to firewood and charcoal despite health and environmental risks.
The Association warns urgent action is needed to prevent broader consequences including accelerated food inflation, collapse of small-scale businesses, job losses and a setback to Nigeria's climate commitments. They're calling on government agencies, regulators, producers and all stakeholders to implement immediate measures to stabilize the market.
How will you adapt your household budget or business operations to cope with these rising cooking gas costs?
