CPPE chief Dr Muda Yusuf said Nigeria’s headline inflation dropped to 14.53% in July 2026 from 15.91% in June, according to NBS data. He linked the decline to sustained macroeconomic stability and a stable, occasionally appreciating exchange rate, which lowered imported inflation and boosted investor confidence. However, Yusuf warned that the high cost of living persists for ordinary Nigerians, driven by stubborn food inflation, transport costs, energy prices and utility charges. He stressed that these structural pressures require fiscal intervention from both federal and state governments to improve living conditions. Yusuf urged policymakers to target subsidies, price controls or investment in agriculture, logistics and power sectors to ease the burden on households. He noted that without such measures, the marginal gain in inflation will not translate into tangible relief for citizens struggling with daily expenses. He also advised households to track spending on essentials and explore cheaper alternatives while awaiting government action.
