Cucurella reveals Mourinho phone call convinced him to join Real Madrid in £52m Chelsea transfer
Marc Cucurella has confirmed he had "no doubts" about joining Real Madrid in his £52m transfer from Chelsea, revealing a phone conversation with new head coach Jose Mourinho convinced him. "When Madrid came I didn't think about it, it's a unique opportunity. Playing for Real Madrid is an honour and not many players can say it, so I had no doubts," Cucurella told Spanish outlet El Mundo.
Mourinho personally assured the Spanish full-back that he wanted to work with him and that he would adapt well at the club. "He told me that he really wanted to work with me, that I was going to adapt very well, that Madrid was a great club," Cucurella explained. This direct approach from Mourinho appears to have secured the signing quickly.
Cucurella joins Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konate as confirmed arrivals this summer, with Denzel Dumfries expected to follow. The £52m investment shows Real Madrid's intent to strengthen under Mourinho's leadership ahead of the new season.
