Dangote broke ground on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 on a $16-billion oil refinery at Kenya's Lamu port, set to process 700,000 barrels of crude daily—surpassing any European refinery capacity. The ceremony was attended by Kenyan President William Ruto, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

This project represents Africa's push to add value to its resources rather than exporting crude and importing refined fuel, a practice Dangote says exports jobs and imports poverty. As builder of Nigeria's largest refinery, Dangote frames this East African facility as key to continental industrialization and lasting prosperity.

The Lamu refinery will process Africa's crude locally, potentially reducing fuel import costs across the continent. For Nigerians, this follows Dangote's domestic refinery efforts that aim to ease local fuel shortages and price volatility.

Will this continental refining boom finally break Africa's cycle of resource wealth without industrial development, or will infrastructure and policy challenges limit its impact?
