Dangote Refinery boosts petrol to 35.9m litres/day as imports drop 26%
In August 2026, Dangote Refinery’s daily premium motor spirit (PMS) receipt to Nigeria’s domestic market rose to 35.9 million litres, up 39 percent from July’s 25.8 million litres, according to the NMDPRA August factsheet released September 24. Crude oil intake also climbed 17 percent to 0.683 million barrels per day. At the same time, fuel imports dropped 26 percent to 14.6 million litres per day, down from 19.7 million litres in July, while national PMS consumption fell 14 percent to 41.5 million litres per day from 48.3 million litres.
This shift signals stronger local refining capacity and reduced reliance on imported fuel, which could ease pressure on foreign reserves and stabilize pump prices if sustained. Lower consumption may reflect economic slowdown or price sensitivity, but the refinery’s growth shows progress toward self‑sufficiency in petrol supply.
