Dangote Refinery denies exporting products to Lomé for re-import into Nigeria
Dangote Refinery's management issued a statement denying claims that it exports petroleum products to Lomé, Togo, and then re-imports them into Nigeria, calling the allegations unfounded and misleading. The refinery said its contracts and tender agreements expressly prohibit the resale or re-importation of its products, and that logistics costs for moving goods to Lomé and back range from US$82 to US$90 per metric ton, making such trade commercially unviable. It emphasized that it does not offer export discounts large enough to offset these costs or create arbitrage opportunities. The statement highlighted the refinery's stringent product traceability system, which records lifting points, vessels, counterparties, and declared destinations to ensure full supply-chain visibility. Management reiterated that enabling re-importation would contradict its core objective of strengthening domestic supply and reducing Nigeria's dependence on imported petroleum products, warning that such practices would strain foreign exchange reserves and hinder national industrial growth. The refinery urged the public to disregard the rumors and affirmed its focus on enhancing energy security and supporting local refining efforts in Africa.
