The Malindi Environment and Land Court ordered the status quo on disputed land in Lamu to be maintained until a hearing on October 14, filed by 133 residents who claim the site is ancestral property. Dangote Group said the ruling does not halt the planned groundbreaking for its 700,000‑barrel‑per‑day oil refinery, though activities at the site may be affected until the case is heard.

This matters because Dangote, a Nigerian conglomerate, recently launched Africa’s biggest IPO for its Lagos refinery and is using that success to fund continental expansion; the Lamu project mirrors the Lagos refinery’s scale and could shape Nigeria’s regional refining ambitions and investment outlook.

The Lamu refinery targets 700,000 bpd, costs an estimated $15‑16 billion, and aims for completion by 2030. With the Lagos refinery IPO having closed earlier in September, stakeholders should watch the October 14 hearing for any injunction that could delay works, and consider how Dangote’s share price might reflect progress on the Kenyan venture.
