Dangote Group will begin work on its proposed $17 billion oil refinery in Lamu, Kenya by the end of September 2026, with completion estimated between three to five years according to different company statements. The announcement came during the opening of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE initial public offering (IPO) in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital. The IPO commenced trading today, aiming to raise about $1.6 billion and value the business at nearly $50 billion, targeting up to 10 million retail investors.

This matters because the Kenya refinery expands Dangote’s operations from West to East Africa, replicating the scale of its Lagos facility and connecting Atlantic to Indian Ocean markets. The IPO offers Nigerian investors a chance to own part of Africa’s largest refining enterprise, while the unprecedented digital drive among 20 bank apps, two mobile money platforms, NGX Invest, and 32 fintechs seeks to democratize access but risks technical strain—as seen with Bamboo’s login failures amid surge traffic.

Investors should note the refinery’s Lamu location, the planned 2,650‑km pipeline from Namibia through Botswana to South Africa (with a possible Zimbabwe extension), and the 30% equity offer to East African countries. For the IPO, consider platform reliability, monitor NGX Invest or alternative apps for updates, and assess long‑term prospects of Dangote’s pan‑African energy expansion before committing funds.
