Former Labour Party vice‑presidential candidate Datti Baba Ahmed told Channels TV on Sunday that nobody will succeed in creating a rift between him and Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress. Speaking in response to criticism that he failed to win his ward and local government area for the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Datti said Obi remains on his list of respected politicians and that, although they now belong to different parties, they share mutual respect.

He quoted, "Nobody will cause a problem between me and my boss, Peter Obi. We can be in different parties today but I still have respect for him as someone who governed and someone who doesn't give shishi." Datti added that Peter Obi and he have mutual respect, so nobody will come between them.

The statement highlights a continued personal and political bond between two prominent opposition figures despite their party separations ahead of the 2027 general election. It suggests that alliances built on respect may endure beyond party labels, potentially influencing voter perceptions and opposition strategy.

What does this mean for voters watching the 2027 race? Should they expect coordinated moves between Obi and Datti’s camps, or see this as a sign that personal loyalty can outweigh partisan pressure in Nigerian politics?
