Eleven oil-producing states shared N321.90 billion in Q1 2026 under Nigeria's 13% derivation formula, with Delta State alone receiving N101.60 billion (nearly a third of total). Bayelsa (N71.64B) and Akwa Ibom (N69.39B) followed, pushing the Niger Delta bloc's collective share to almost 90%. In stark contrast, Enugu and Kogi states received only N46,991 each - symbolic amounts reflecting their marginal oil output.

This extreme concentration raises critical accountability questions: Despite massive allocations, oil-producing communities in Delta, Bayelsa, etc. still contend with gas flaring, spills, and degraded farmland - burdens derivation payments are meant to offset. As seen in places like Agwa (Imo State) where oil operations exist but electricity, tarred roads and healthcare remain absent, will these billions translate to visible improvements in infrastructure, healthcare, education and water access for host communities?

The core issue isn't just the size of the cheque, but whether state governments are using derivation revenues to fulfill their constitutional purpose: offsetting environmental costs and developing oil-producing areas. Without tangible impact in communities bearing extraction costs, these funds risk becoming another revenue stream missing in action.
