DRC Ebola deaths surpass 1,000; Africa warns of $3.6B economic risk
The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen above 1,000, with 1,033 confirmed deaths and 2,536 cases reported by the DRC's National Institute of Public Health on Thursday. This marks a rapid acceleration: just one week earlier the outbreak had recorded 754 deaths and 2,011 cases. Africa CDC Director General Jean Kaseya warned that without urgent action the outbreak could become one of the worst Ebola epidemics ever recorded. The World Health Organization noted the case‑fatality rate has climbed to 37% (up from 32% a week ago), attributing the rise to delays in detecting cases, isolating patients and providing treatment, not to a more virulent virus strain. No approved vaccine exists for the Bundibugyo strain, so containment relies on surveillance, isolation, supportive care and safe burials. Beyond the health crisis, the United Nations estimates that if the virus remains confined to the DRC and neighbouring Uganda, the Congolese economy could lose about $1 billion in GDP. In a worst‑case scenario—spread to Rwanda, Angola and combined with higher global fuel prices from Middle East tensions—Africa could lose up to $3.6 billion in output and more than 328,000 jobs. For Nigerians, the outbreak raises concerns about regional spread, potential travel disruptions and broader economic fallout that could affect trade, remittances and livelihoods across the continent. Given the lack of a specific vaccine, staying informed about travel advisories, supporting credible public‑health appeals and practicing standard hygiene precautions when travelling to affected areas are prudent steps.
