DSS Chief Ajayi transforms Nigeria's media relations, earns press freedom awards
Adeola Ajayi, DSS Director-General since August 2024, has shifted Nigeria's intelligence community from adversarial to partnership approach with media, earning international recognition including IPI award for press freedom advocacy, BON Friend of Media honor, and NUJ Man of the Year 2026. President Tinubu publicly endorsed this approach after Ajayi's IPI recognition, urging other security agencies to engage media as partners.
This represents a potential institutional shift where strength coexists with accountability, challenging historical hostility between security agencies and press. Ajayi emphasizes intelligence-led preventive security, community engagement as part of security architecture, and has authorized release and compensation for wrongfully detained individuals.
