Adeola Ajayi, DSS Director-General since August 2024, has shifted Nigeria's intelligence community from adversarial to partnership approach with media, earning international recognition including IPI award for press freedom advocacy, BON Friend of Media honor, and NUJ Man of the Year 2026. President Tinubu publicly endorsed this approach after Ajayi's IPI recognition, urging other security agencies to engage media as partners.

This represents a potential institutional shift where strength coexists with accountability, challenging historical hostility between security agencies and press. Ajayi emphasizes intelligence-led preventive security, community engagement as part of security architecture, and has authorized release and compensation for wrongfully detained individuals. The National Security Summit jointly organized by NUJ and DSS brought stakeholders together to discuss security-responsible journalism partnership.

The transformation's real test is whether changes outlast Ajayi's tenure through institutionalized dispute resolution mechanisms, continued accountability for errors, and legal-bound intelligence operations. If genuine, Nigeria should share this model with African media organizations and AU platforms as evidence-based continental engagement, not propaganda, to reshape how Africa views democratic security institutions.
