Ebele Enunwa's MarketSquare creates 4,000+ jobs across 16 cities after decade-long retail build
Ebele Enunwa has built MarketSquare into Nigeria's largest modern supermarket network, employing over 4,000 people across 16 cities since launching a single outlet in 2015. This achievement stems from his decade-long focus on creating structured supply chains, logistics networks and pricing systems designed to work consistently across Nigeria's fragmented consumer market.
The foundation came from his earlier success building Sundry Foods Limited into a 100+ outlet food service group with brands like Kilimanjaro and Nibbles Bread. After studying Accounting at Unilorin, completing NYSC at Deloitte and rising to Regional Manager at Stanbic IBTC (1999-2004), he applied corporate systems thinking to retail. His Cornell Hospitality Masters (2008) further shaped his consumer-experience approach.
Today, Enunwa represents a generation of Nigerian founders building institution-scale consumer businesses. His journey shows how formal retail models can succeed in Nigeria's informal-dominated market by solving structural gaps in supply chain and consistency - not just opening stores.
What lessons can Nigerian entrepreneurs draw from Enunwa's approach of adapting corporate systems to local market fragmentation when scaling consumer businesses?
