Education Minister Orders Expulsion of Student Kidnappers, Boosts Campus Security Nationwide
Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa has directed all Nigerian tertiary institution heads to expel any student found guilty of kidnapping after due investigation. The directive, issued following a meeting with FULafia's Governing Council, also mandates stronger internal intelligence gathering and collaboration with DSS and other security agencies to improve campus safety nationwide.
Alausa emphasized that while campuses remain largely safe, recent student-involved kidnapping incidents off-campus necessitate stronger surveillance, warning that tolerating bad behavior breeds criminal culture. He reiterated the federal government's no-ransom policy for kidnappings and announced TETFund's 2027 intervention will fund security upgrades like perimeter fencing at universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The move comes as Pro-Chancellor Lola Fibisola Akande of FULafia raised concerns about student accommodation, electricity and suspected links between some students and external kidnapping rings, confirming the institution's opposition to ransom payments.
