EFCC has warned that impersonators are carrying out fake sting operations in major Nigerian cities, posing as officers to extort money and valuables from unsuspecting citizens. In a statement issued on Tuesday by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the commission said fraudsters ambush youths leaving popular eateries and fun spots, accusing them of internet fraud and seizing their belongings. Others pose as EFCC officers in fake uniforms, moving victims to locations made to resemble EFCC offices to appear legitimate. A separate group targets motorists, using alleged number‑plate violations and dangerous weapons to demand cash on trumped‑up charges. Online, impostors create dramatized videos of forced entries and broken doors to mislead the public into believing the EFCC conducts such raids. These actions risk eroding trust in the commission and expose ordinary Nigerians to theft and intimidation. The EFCC advises the public to verify any officer’s identity through official channels, refuse to hand over money or items to unverified individuals, and report suspicious encounters to the nearest police station or the commission’s tip‑lines. Staying alert and confirming authenticity can help prevent falling victim to these schemes.
