Egypt's President Sisi confirms he won't seek office after 2030 term ends

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi stated on October 11, 2026 that he will not run for re-election when his current term expires in 2030, calling the matter 'completely settled'. Speaking at the Egyptian Military Academy graduation in the New Administrative Capital, the 71-year-old former general emphasized the constitution 'would not be touched' and his presidency ends in 2030 'if I am still alive'.

This announcement addresses years of speculation that Sisi might pursue constitutional changes to extend his rule beyond 2030. Under 2019 amendments, presidential terms were extended from four to six years, allowing his 2023 re-election for a term ending in 2030. Sisi said the period until 2030 would focus on training new leaders through the Military Academy.

For Nigerians observing Africa's democratic trajectory, Egypt's leadership transition matters as the continent's third-largest economy and a key regional actor. While Sisi's confirmation reduces immediate authoritarian permanence concerns, his 12-year tenure has seen ambitious megaprojects funded by borrowing, contributing to economic pressures, and ongoing human rights criticism that his government rejects as necessary for stability.

Does this signal genuine progress in Africa's leadership cycles, or merely a managed transition within existing power structures?
