Ejiofor says he left IPOB leader's counsel in 2023, firm continues as solicitors

Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor says he voluntarily withdrew from representing jailed IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu in December 2023, nearly three years before Kanu's July 22 letter terminating his legal services. In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Ejiofor insisted he has not acted as Kanu's personal counsel, family lawyer or legal representative since that date, calling any suggestion otherwise a distortion of facts. He added that his law firm remains under a valid continuous retainer as solicitors to IPOB, having secured the discharge and acquittal of over 200 alleged IPOB members in courts across Abuja, Ebonyi and Abia states between December 2023 and 2025. Ejiofor stressed that Kanu never independently appointed his firm as IPOB's solicitors; the leader's involvement was limited to his personal representation, from which Ejiofor had already disengaged. He disclosed that IPOB has today reaffirmed his firm's status as the organisation's solicitors and legal representatives, insisting the professional relationship rests on a continuing mandate that cannot be altered by former leaders. Ejiofor also questioned the authenticity of communications purportedly issued by inmates, noting the Nigerian Correctional Service Act requires such correspondence to be authenticated by the officer in charge of the facility, warning lawyers and the public against relying on unauthorised inmate messages. The clarification follows Kanu's letter directing Ejiofor to stop representing him, his family or IPOB, cease issuing public statements on their behalf, and withdraw from all pending matters where he remains counsel on record, while warning that unauthorised disclosure of confidential information could attract disciplinary action.
