El-Rufai detention sparks debate over APC's 2027 election chances in North
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has been detained since February 2026 on money-laundering charges brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). He was arraigned in March and pleaded not guilty. The ongoing detention has sparked debate about its effect on the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections, especially in Northern Nigeria where El-Rufai remains a prominent figure and has recently aligned with the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Political analyst Dr Kabiru Said Sufi told DAILY POST that the APC could benefit organisationally from El-Rufai's absence as a key opposition strategist, but warned that if public anger over the detention resurges it could backfire on the ruling party. Comrade Aminu Rabiu Kano added that while detention limits El-Rufai's physical participation, it does not erase his influence, and stressed that Northern voters weigh security, economy and government performance alongside legal perceptions.
Comrade Umar Muhammad Kofar Naisa, Country Director of SEDSAC, argued that continued detention could hurt the APC by generating sympathy for the former governor, noting El-Rufai's role in bringing President Tinubu to power and warning that the case may deter APC members from open dissent. Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II questioned the consistency of Nigeria's anti-corruption campaign, pointing out that El-Rufai has been held for seven months without a conviction.
The outcome will hinge on how voters interpret the case - whether as a legitimate legal process or political persecution - and how both APC and opposition deploy the issue during the 2027 campaign. Will you view El-Rufai's detention as a sign of selective anti-corruption effort or as a legitimate legal process, and how might that shape your voting decision in 2027?
