Electricity consumers got N155m billing refund in 2025

Electricity consumers in Nigeria received N155.84 million in credit refunds from distribution companies last year, according to NERC's latest quarterly data. The refunds came from verified overbilling and billing disputes resolved by Discos throughout 2025.

Breaking down the refunds: N32.21m in Q1, N40.22m in Q2, N32.66m in Q3, and N50.75m in Q4. Billing disputes remain the biggest headache for consumers, accounting for 29-37% of all complaints, with metering issues (32%) and service interruptions (13.65%) making up the bulk of remaining grievances.

What this means for you: If you've been overcharged for electricity, you're entitled to a refund. The process typically involves submitting a complaint to your Disco with supporting evidence. With only 37% of complaints resolved in Q1, persistence matters. Keep copies of your bills, meter readings, and communication with your Disco.
