Emir Lamido Sanusi alleged on Monday that political connections influence how Nigeria handles corruption cases, undermining public confidence in anti-corruption agencies. Speaking at the Lagos launch of 'The Unexplained Wealth Trilogy' by Wahab Shittu (SAN), he questioned whether anti-corruption efforts target graft or political opponents, citing former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai's seven-month detention without conviction. Sanusi stated that mere anti-corruption laws are insufficient without strong, independent institutions to investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate impartially. He claimed some cases are dropped when suspects have 'the right political environment' or support, while others proceed despite lack of evidence, making citizens wonder if it's 'really a fight against corruption or a political battle.' The Emir warned such selective prosecution erodes rule of law integrity and urged political leaders and judicial authorities to apply laws strictly for their intended purpose rather than political expediency. He noted El-Rufai—whom he called his brother—remains detained by ICPC despite not being convicted, facing ongoing trial over corruption and money laundering charges he contests. Sanusi's remarks come days after El-Rufai reported allies distancing themselves since his detention. Will Nigerians demand genuine institutional independence to ensure anti-corruption fights target graft not politics, or accept that legal processes may serve political agendas?
