Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi disclosed yesterday that the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) demands both an emir and a high-ranking government official to sign former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai's bail papers. El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, over alleged fraud and misuse of office. On April 13, ICPC filed nine revised charges against him at a Kaduna high court. Sanusi told journalists the release conditions are 'very tough,' specifying that guarantors must include a traditional ruler and a senior government figure. This unusual dual-guarantor requirement suggests heightened scrutiny in the anti-corruption case against the former governor, who remains detained despite multiple court appearances. The ICPC has not publicly commented on these specific bail conditions, which exceed standard surety arrangements for similar cases. Understanding this development helps assess whether anti-corruption proceedings are being applied uniformly or influenced by political considerations, especially given El-Rufai's prominent APC affiliation and past governorship role.
