EU hits Google with $462M fine over location data breach, orders compliance

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission, acting for the EU, fined Google 403 million euros ($462 million) for violating GDPR on location data processing between May 2018 and February 2020. The regulator said Google failed to ensure the lawfulness and fairness of how it used location data from web and app activity and location history, and retained the data longer than necessary.

For Nigerians who use Google Search, Maps, Android or other services, the fine highlights how global tech companies handle personal location data—often to tailor ads or infer interests—without users fully understanding the scope. While GDPR applies in Europe, the case underscores growing worldwide scrutiny of data practices that could affect local users’ privacy and control over their information.

The DPC also ordered Google to bring its location data processing into line with GDPR within six months. Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
