EU moves toward digital euro vote, aims to cut reliance on US payment systems

EU lawmakers are set to vote on Tuesday on the rules needed to launch a digital euro, a move the European Central Bank says could make the virtual currency available to citizens by 2029 if the rules are approved by year‑end, with a pilot planned for mid‑2027. The digital euro would hold the same value as cash and be stored in a separate wallet linked to a bank or post office account, allowing payments by card, app or phone while promising privacy protection and an offline mode comparable to using cash.

For Nigerians, the initiative matters because it shows how regional blocs are seeking sovereignty over payment systems to cut reliance on US‑dominated networks like Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay. With nearly two‑thirds of card payments in the euro area handled by non‑European firms and many eurozone countries lacking a national card scheme, the eurozone’s push mirrors Nigeria’s own e‑Naira ambitions and could shape global payment standards, affecting remittances, cross‑border trade and the cost of doing business with Europe.

What you should know: the digital euro will not replace cash or existing private payment options; it is meant to offer an additional choice. If you travel to Europe or work with European partners, you may soon be able to pay with digital euros. Watch for the EU vote outcome and the ECB’s timeline, and consider how Nigeria’s digital currency strategy might evolve in response to similar sovereignty pushes elsewhere.
