EU, US Reach Trade Deal to Avoid Trump's July Tariff Deadline

EU lawmakers and member states reached agreement early Wednesday to implement the bloc's trade pact with United States, meeting President Donald Trump's July 4 deadline to avoid new tariffs. The 27-nation bloc had agreed last July to set 15% levies on most European goods while pledging to scrap levies on most US imports, but had yet to fulfill its side of the bargain until now.

The deal includes a suspension mechanism allowing the European Commission to impose tariffs if the US fails to meet commitments or discriminates against EU economic operators. Lawmakers also agreed to remove the "sunrise" clause that would have required EU concessions to kick in only after US actions, while pushing the "sunset" clause to end of 2029 instead of 2028.

US had threatened to raise tariffs on European cars and trucks from 15% to 25% if the deal wasn't implemented by July 4. The EU cannot afford to neglect its largest trade partner, the $1.9-trillion relationship with the United States. With global trade tensions affecting currency markets and import prices worldwide, how might this stability impact Nigeria's trade relationships with both economic powers?
