EUprobes Snapchat over child safety concerns
European Union regulators launched a formal investigation into Snapchat on Thursday, alleging the platform fails to protect minors from grooming, illegal drug sales, and privacy violations. The probe focuses on five key areas: insufficient age verification measures allowing underage access, inadequate protection against sexual exploitation attempts, weak default privacy settings, ineffective tools blocking minors from seeing age-restricted content like vapes and alcohol, and unclear reporting mechanisms for illegal material. Snapchat, which claims 97 million monthly EU users aged 13+, stated child safety is its top priority and confirmed full cooperation with the investigation. The probe marks the first DSA compliance check against Snapchat under EU digital safety laws, with potential fines up to 6% of global revenue or even platform bans for serious violations. Nigerian parents should note similar safety concerns apply to local apps like Instagram and TikTok, which also face regulatory scrutiny.
