In 2013, former British Army officer Wayne Hennessy-Barrett arrived in Kenya’s informal markets asking traders what they needed to keep businesses running. They said they required immediate working capital loans to buy and sell goods—without collateral or financial records. He lent $100 based on character, tracked repayments, and used that behavior to determine future loan sizes, founding 4G Capital. As of June 2026, the lender has disbursed over $1 billion across 7 million loans with a 95% repayment rate. Average loans range from $120-$130, scaling to $2,000 for reliable borrowers, while its supply-chain finance averages $400. The model works by assessing repayment behavior instead of traditional collateral, addressing a critical gap for Kenya’s 7.2 million MSMEs facing a $19.3 billion financing shortage. Hennessy-Barrett notes the company has served just under 800,000 Kenyan MSMEs, leaving vast room for growth. For Nigeria’s similar informal market dynamics, this proves character-based lending can scale at scale. Fintech founders and policymakers should study how repayment history algorithms and enterprise training build creditworthiness where conventional banks won’t go—turning market conversations into sustainable capital access.
