Former House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara says any discussion about a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket for the 2027 election must be handled carefully to protect national unity and inclusiveness. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Dogara argued that if Nigeria is considering a rotational presidency, it should also discuss religious balance, calling it a matter of justice.

Dogara, a prominent northern Christian leader, stated that governance must accommodate people of all religious backgrounds. He believes the President’s final decision on party tickets should be guided by fairness. While acknowledging that sitting presidents typically secure their party’s nomination, Dogara expressed confidence that President Tinubu would listen to public opinion if there’s strong demand for balance.

"If we are having a discussion about rotational presidency, there is nothing stopping us from having that discussion as well," Dogara said. He emphasized that the issue isn’t limited to northern Christians but concerns the Christian faith overall. "Justice demands that we should balance things," he added, noting that leaders must act on what is right.

Dogara confirmed that conversations about the 2027 ticket are already happening. He warned against any leader who divides the North along religious lines, stating, "anybody who divides the north along religious lines has actually conquered the North." The former Speaker's comments come amid ongoing debates about zoning and ticket composition for the next election cycle.
