The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced on June 22, 2026 that it is considering a final extension of the deadline for airport cab operators to upgrade their vehicles, moving the compliance date from June 2026 to October 2026. FAAN said discussions on the vehicle upgrade policy began in July 2024, with earlier deadlines set for January 2026 and then June 2026 after operators cited economic challenges. The authority said this would be the last extension, noting that operators have had over two years to comply. FAAN also defended its decision to raise the operational tariff for airport cabs from ₦500 to ₦1,500, saying the unchanged rate for more than eight years no longer reflects current inflation, maintenance costs and broader business expenses. The tariff adjustment, effective immediately, aims to support airport infrastructure and sustain service quality. In related reforms, FAAN confirmed that cash payments will no longer be accepted at airport pay points from March 1, 2026, free high‑speed Wi‑Fi has been rolled out at major international airports in partnership with MTN Nigeria, and cargo port charges were increased to ₦20 in January 2026—the first rise in nearly two decades. FAAN stressed that these measures aim to improve passenger experience, safety and comfort at Nigerian airports.
